From June the Humboldt current pushes cold, nutrient-heavy water up the west side of the archipelago, dropping the sea to around 19°C and triggering the year’s feeding activity — whale sharks off Darwin and Wolf, hammerhead schools, penguins hunting, and albatross nesting on Española until December. The cost is comfort: the garúa mist sits on the highlands, seas are rougher, and you will want a full wetsuit. Book the western itinerary or you miss the upwelling entirely.
